T1LC News – November 2022

Work this month has remained focused on the overhaul of 31463, all the fuel pumps have been removed from the power unit so these and the injectors have gone for overhaul. The lube oil system has had various parts of it blanked off ready for flushing the crank shaft and the oil priming pump has been inspected. It was found to be in less than ideal condition, especially as the flushing will necessitate the pump running for much of a day, so the opportunity has been taken to strip it down almost completely for a thorough clean. This job would have been complete had a bolt that holds the bearing together not snapped, but a short re-visit to this task saw a new bolt made and fitted. The sump cleaning is almost complete, just a few areas of more stubborn sludge to remove. The cam covers have been off, cams and surrounding area cleaned and the covers and trays cleaned before the covers being temporarily refitted awaiting new gaskets. On the top of the power unit, this has had a final clean and painted in primer.
The removed oil filter body has had new gaskets made and has been refitted.
One of the cylinder heads which had failed its pressure test due to a leaking injector tube has been repaired. The heads are due to go away for overhaul imminently.
The new liners have been prepped for fitment with the tops and bottoms being wire wheeled to remove surface rust and old paint, a meticulous clean and have been honed out and are now ready for fitting.
Air inlet manifolds have been steam cleaned inside and out, these and the intermediate cylinder head covers have been cleaned and painted in primer.
The never ending roof repairs continue with the boiler roof section having more bits cut out and replaced, we are awaiting delivery of the new disc that will fill this hole, which used to be for the boiler flue, hopefully this is the last welding job on this particular roof section. The roof section over the electrical cubical has had a section cut out.
